Sleep Number PlushComfort Pillow REVIEW
--
For years, I have had trouble find the ‘right’ pillow for me to sleep soundly. I feel a little like Goldilocks when she is trying the beds in the bears’ house. I can find ones that are too hard and too soft, but never one that ‘just right’. That was the case until I was introduced to the PlushComfort pillow from Sleep Number. It’s a customizable pillow that gives you options for firmness without having to go through multiple pillows to do it.
Details
The PlushComfort pillows are designed to be silky-soft and hypoallergenic. They are a “down-alternative” style pillow and the filling mimics the softness of premium down. That combined with the smooth, brushed cotton cover makes for a very comfortable addition to any Sleep Number sleep system. The pillow ranges in price from $49.99–79.99 (MSRP) but they can be found on sale (at the time of publishing this article) for as low as $29.99 starting price. There are three different design options that Sleep Number offers with the PlushComfort pillow — classic, curved, and ultimate.
Sleep Number describes them like this —
- Classic: Gently supports your head and neck. Best for stomach or back sleepers.
- Curved: Fits your contours for enhanced comfort and support. Best for side or back sleepers
- Ultimate: Three removable inserts let you individualize your support and height as your sleep needs change. Great for all sleeping positions. Recommend 1–2 inserts for stomach sleepers; 2–3 inserts for back or side sleepers.
The pillows are machine washable but there are specific details to follow for their care. You can fluff or shake the pillow as needed to maintain the distribution of the filling. When it comes to washing it, use a warm wash cycle with mild detergent in a commercial-size washing machine. In the case of the Ultimate PlushComfort pillow, you have to remove the cover prior to washing it. You can tumble dry the pillow for up to 3 low heat cycles to ensure it’s completely dry.
The PlushComfort pillow is made in the USA.
User Experience
The pillow arrived with three inserts as described. I was so excited to test out the new bedding that I immediately pulled it out of its plastic packaging and slid it onto the bed. It was the middle of the afternoon so I really only had the chance to take a short nap. I thought it was comfortable, but not exactly what I expected. With the comfort of the Sleep Number bed being such a dramatic difference, that was what I thought sleeping with the PlushComfort would be like. That night I slept with the pillow just as it arrived — with three inserts included in the sleeve. The next morning I woke up and had a small headache. For me, that is usually indicative of an uncomfortable pillow — one that it too hard.
The next night — after reviewing the materials that came with the PlushComfort, I decided to remove one of the inserts. This made the pillow feel much less firm and more like a soft, fluffy cloud. As I settled my head into the dream-inducing headrest, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long, long time — truly comfortable. The next morning, I actually felt well-rested, which is a rarity for me. I usually wake up feeling beat up and in lots of pain caused by my bed and/or pillow. Ever since I got the Sleep Number bed, I stopped having back and muscle pain caused by the bed, but I continued having neck pain and headaches. The addition of the PlushComfort pillow system has changed that completely and I sleep very comfortably now.
I’ve taken a bit of time with the PlushComfort to make sure that the first night sleep wasn’t a fluke and that the pillow is really ‘that’ comfortable. I can say now with certainty that it is. I went on a 10-day long vacation and did not take my PlushComfort pillow with me. The bed I slept on was definitely not a Sleep Number bed and the pillow was easily flattened. I do believe it was meant to be a ‘down alternative’ pillow just like the PlushComfort, but I did not have the same sleep benefits from the vacation pillows. In fact, I found myself with that old neck and back pain. As soon as I had a good night sleep in my own Sleep Number bed and pillow, those aches and pains were nearly non-existent.
Conclusions
I wasn’t sure how I felt about upgrading my pillow once again, but since it’s had such a profound change in the way I sleep and as a result feel throughout the day, I can recommend it to anyone out there. If you find yourself having issues sleeping like I did, give a new pillow a try and don’t be afraid to get something that is more ‘premium’ like the PlushComfort. It could really make a difference for you.
