NUDIST Case REVIEW Minimalist Yet Fun

As the prices of our smartphones skyrocket, I still stare dumbfounded when I see unadorned smartphones in the wild. Bumps, stumbles, scuffs, and missteps happen all the time and unexpected times at that. If you have ever dropped your phone, you know clearly well the dread of the fall and then the sound that emanates with the sudden stop at the bottom. Luckily, there are minimalistic cases that add a great deal of protection to your phone. You do not need to lock your phone into a lockbox, nor do you need to have one of the Hulkbuster style cases. The Silk Smartish Nudist case will allow you to add a touch of personal flare and protection to your phone, without turning it into a paperweight.

The Nudist iPhone X/Xs Case arrived in a 3 1/8 inches wide by 5 7/8 inches tall by 1/2 inches thick retail box. The 4 1/2 inches tall by 1 3/4 inches wide image was proudly displayed obliquely upon a clean white cover, with the bold mint NUDIST title along the top. Just to the right of the case (your left), you will find a mint green martini glass and along the bottom corner “silk Smartish products.” Rotating the packaging ninety degrees clockwise, the left side panel displayed silk, in a copper font, and Smartish products in mint font along the top. The opposing side panel, like the mighty mullet, displayed “BUSINESS IN THE FRONT/PARTY IN THE BACK” with arrows pointing to the cover and back respectively. The back panel displayed numerous clip art images: “OPEN SESAME” on the pull tab, an avocado, paper airplane, cuff of coffee, beer, martinis, a taco, credit card+money+iPhone, AUSTIN, guitar, chihuahua, light bulb, two cactuses and a flame inside of a thought bubble. According to the panel, if you join the Smartish Society, “you can get free stuff, smartass banter, and custom swag straight to your inbox.” The bottom panel provided the typical legalese verbiage and the top panel listed silk in copper and Smartish products in mint green font.

Pulling on the Open Sesame tab, I removed the contents of the box. There was a cardboard panel that displayed NUDIST across the top, silk along the bottom (again in copper) and a variety of mint colored icons: magnifying glasses, martini bottles, diamonds. The back side of the cardboard panel detailed the lifetime warranty (SilkSmartish.com/support), instructions for applying the screen protector (SilkSmartish.com/sp-install), and asked for us to leave a review at amazon.com/RYP. Both the inner and outer wings of the cardboard displayed the same silk Smartish products logo as above. The packaging was fun, playful, and the inner cardboard and case continued this theme. Since the cover picture displayed a clear phone case, I did not expect to find an image filled backing on the Nudist clear case. I believe a better title for this case would have been the silk Smartish Burlesque case.

The Nudist case had vertical cutouts for the camera, horizontal cutouts for the lightning port and speakers and volume toggle. The 0.95-ounce, 5 3/4 inches tall by 2 7/8 inches wide by 3/8 inches thick case displayed a plethora of cartoony images upon a frosted background. The case was lightweight and slim, adding very little to the heft of the phone. The clear sides and frosted back allowed the user to enjoy the protective case and to simultaneously enjoy the splendor of the iPhone. The packaging did not discuss any degree of drop protection, but the website discussed the corner air bumpers. I can attest that the case, corners included, protected my iPhone X from three accidental drops. One of these drops was onto carpet and two others were onto my hardwood kitchen floor. The frosted back protected from scratches, scuffs and fingerprints and the side buttons were well aligned and responsive. The front edges stuck up slightly above the screen and added a degree of protection. As a bonus, the company also included a thin plastic screen protector, which proved easy to install. After I cleaned the surface with Whoosh Screen cleaner, I removed the “back” sticker from the screen protector and installed the protector from the notch downward. I found a few bubbles under the plastic sheet and was disappointed that there was not an included screen tool. I removed a local grocery rewards card and used the card to scrape out the air bubbles.

If you are looking for a minimalistic and protective case that allows a touch of the iPhone to seep through, look no further than the Nudist case. It is not designed to be a fully immersive armor style case but it will get the job done. If the cartoonish characters are not your cup of tea, there is also a frosted case without characters.
