MOFT Carry Sleeve with Invisible Stand and Storage REVIEW | MacSources

As we approach the end of 2020, many wait patiently for Apple to announce their new products. Recently, to both fanfare and fury, they announced that they would be changing to their 12-core 5nm ARM processors. Despite the possible negative aspects of this decision, change is necessary and expected in this space. As our technology expands, companies develop accessories and technologies of their own, to enhance/modify our lifestyles. Designed for an on-the-go, business-travel individual, MOFT announced their Carry Sleeve with Invisible Stand & Storage with their Indiegogo campaign on 6/29/20. It may be “the only laptop sleeve you ever need.”
The MOFT Carry Sleeve/Stand arrived in a classy white 6 1/8 inches wide by 11 3/8 inches long by 1 1/4 inches thick cardboard sample shell. Although this may not be the finalized package, I was impressed with the clean appearance of the shimmering silver MOFT name on the cover. The rear panel had a sticker which showed the device in both configurations, carry sleeve and MacBook stand. The sticker provided four product describing icons: 1. Expand More Storage Space by Neoprene. 2. Protect Your Laptop All Around. 3. Easy to Carry with Slim Design. 4. Switch into a Laptop Stand in 1-Sec. Along the right side of the sticker, the company provided the product specifications: 1. Dimensions: 395 mm Wide x 275 mm Long x 2–7 mm thick. 2. Weight: 275.5 g (13.2 oz). 3. Material PTU/Fiberglass/Magnets/Neoprene/Iron/Polycarbonate. Lastly, you will find a MOFT QR code, two SKU barcodes, FaceBook/ Instagram @Moft.us addresses, and several product manufacturing labels. To access the MOFT Carry Sleeve/Stand, I cut the tape at all 4 side, separated the two halves of the outer packaging, and removed the thin plastic bag.
The matte black, 13.15-oz, PTU carry sleeve had no noticeable smell and felt smooth to the touch. Measuring at 15 1/2 inches long by 10 1/2 inches tall, the sleeve had no depth to speak of. The front cover had a trapezoidal magnetic flap, which measured 10 1/2 inches wide at the base, 6 1/2 inches wide at the top, and was 4 1/8 inches tall. With the flap open, you will find molded lines that create two right triangles (3 1/8 x 3 1/8 by 4 1/4 inches) and a trapezoid (7 1/4 inches wide at the top by 13 3/4 inches wide at the base by 3 1/2 inches tall) along the top. Beneath this section, you will find a molded rectangle measuring 14 inches wide by 6 inches tall. Stitched into the lower rim of the cover panel, you will find a small trapezoidal flap with “MOFT” etched into the surface (2 1/2 inches wide at the top by 3 inches wide by 5/8 inches tall). Lastly, I was quite impressed with the spacing/quality of the stitching that MOFT utilized along the left, right, and bottom panel. Turning the carry sleeve over, I was pleased to find a similar geometric design. Along the top, you will find two right triangles measuring 1 1/4 inches wide by 2 3/8 inches tall by 3 inches along the hypotenuse. The centralized trapezoid measured 11 inches wide along the top by, 13 3/8 inches wide along the base, and was 2 3/8 inches tall. Along the bottom half, I found a rounded rectangular base 14 1/4 inches wide, but the sides angled into the upper trapezoid. Unlike the lower rectangle of the cover, the lower rear rectangle had a centralized 11 inches wide by 4 7/8 inches tall cutout. Inside of this cutout, you will find a wet-suit like neoprene material.
To deploy the indivisible stand feature of the MOFT 4-in-1 device, lift the flap, remove your MacBook accessories, then the MacBook itself. Next, place the sleeve flat on a desk/surface and then grip the top edge of the anterior trapezoid. You will notice that the material will bend along the hypotenuse of the outer triangles and the corners will tend to fold inward. Press the outer corner of each the triangles inward until the smaller rear triangle attaches to an internal hidden magnet. Repeat this process on the other side to create the 25 degree viewing angle. To finish the setup, fold the flap into the opening to add an extra layer of backing support. To return to the sleeve configuration, open the flap, lift outward on the two triangles and the device will flatten out. To activate the 15 degree viewing angle, you will not need to fold in the side corners. Simply grip the top of the front trapezoid as above, lift up slightly, fold the lip of the flap down, fold the entire flap forward and then rest the entire top of the sleeve on the flap. Again, you will find hidden magnets to hold the configuration. Once you have chosen your desired viewing angle, place the front lip of your MacBook into the small trapezoidal flap at the bottom edge of the cover. This flap was designed to reduce the chances that your MacBook will turn into a bobsled.
I enjoyed the overall look and feel of the scratch-resistant carry sleeve. Currently available through its Indiegogo campaign, the MOFT 4-in-1 sleeve is available in black, blue, dark brown, and tan. Having reviewed the black MOFT device, I absolutely loved the thin multi feature design On first impression, the molded lines, the soft outer rim and the hardened geometric shapes resembled some of the better leather-work that I have seen. As an aside, the only regret that I had was that I missed the classic leather smell. When you open up the internal flap, you will find a small name card along the front and a sleeve that will accommodate a 15 inch MacBook. Along the back of the panel, MOFT included a thin felt material that was attached at the base. If you slide this panel forward, you will find the included expandable accessory panel. This section was designed for your cable, charger, and other accessories. It is important to note that the sleeve will not accommodate the MacBook if it is already within a case. Designed for a minimalist, on-the-go lifestyle, the case is not designed as luggage or armor. Instead, the laptop sleeve plus the hidden stand feature, was designed for an every-day-carry, EDC experience. You can slide this into your briefcase, messenger bag, or backpack. You can remove the sleeve, slide your MacBook out and setup the stand for improved viewing (15 and 25 degree).
I was initially leery about using the back panel to store my charger/cable because I was fearful that it would dent my MacBook. Having used the device over the last week and half, I found that I typically set it down on the front surface anyway. Personally, this made me question my description of the front vs back of the device. If I was going to design a MOFT 4-in-1 sleeve version 2.0, I would have added the MOFT name to the large trapezoidal flap and also along the lower rectangle of the back. Even though I appreciate cryptic product markings, I feel that a few other splashes of “yeah we built this thing” would be appropriate. If you are looking for a laptop sleep unlike any other, look no further than the MOFT 4-in-1 Carry Sleeve/Invisible Stand and Storage. I guess my only other revision would be a cool catchy name for the MOFT device like one of the transformers or one of Iron Man’s suits.
