LumiCharge Smart Lamp REVIEW

I work in an office that runs off of overhead florescent lighting. While it makes everything nice and bright, it also causes some discomfort for those of us who work at a computer all day. I used to work in an environment that had soft lighting provided by various lamps and when I moved to this new position, I noticed a pretty large difference between the two lighting styles. Slowly, but surely, I’ve been upgrading the lighting in my office to include LED and traditional lamps so that I can eliminate the overhead lighting. One issue I have though is desk clutter. So, when I found out about LumiCharge, I was thrilled.

DETAILS

LumiCharge is a smart, dimmable LED desk lamp that also provides a USB charging dock and universal phone charger for users. There are three different color modes — soft white, white, and yellow — and of course, adjustable brightness via in-line controls. The lamp is designed in a modern style that will blend in with most office or home decor. Because of its adjustable brightness and color temperature modes, Lumicharge is ideal for a reading lamp or night light.

LumiCharge has many different features to it including:

  • LED lamps as the light source
  • LED display with time, date, day, and temperature readouts
  • A motion sensor light
  • Charging dock for mobile phones
  • Touch sensitive light controls
  • Speaker for alarm and event reminders
  • Internal battery for display backup
  • Two (2) USB-A charging ports

The universal charging wheel is probably the most intriguing feature of this lamp. The wheel offers users the option of charging phones that are use Lightning, USB-C, or Micro USB without the use of additional adapters.

USER EXPERIENCE

LumiCharge was ready to go out of the box. It comes with an operating manual, which is actually quite informative not only about the functions of the lamp, but about the features of the lamp itself. The lamp is powered by LEDs that provide three different color temperatures. This feature was one of the most appealing ones to me. While I love having LED lamps because they have a longer lifespan, I sometimes don’t like the harsh white light they produce. The soft white color option is perfect for me as I work at my desk.

The ability to charge a phone using the lamp is another huge perk in my opinion. The lamp base acts as the charging dock and while the base may be a bit larger than some desk lamps, it serves two purposes and therefore, reduces desk clutter. As I mentioned earlier in this review, desk clutter was one of the big issues I have with using lamps instead of the overhead lighting in my office. The fact that this lamp combines two of the items on regularly found on my desk gives me enough reason to integrate it into my set-up.

Even though the universal charging dock is a big plus in my book, I did find that phones need to be without a case in order for them to charge. My main phone is an iPhone XS and I keep a slim case on it for scratch protection. It is a standard sized case and not a rugged one and the phone was still not able to ’snap’ into place to charge until I took the case off of the phone. LumiCharge is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to fund the second generation LumiCharge lamp, which might solve this problem.

As far as lamp light goes, I find LumiCharge to be more than adequate to light up my desk and surrounding areas. I found it intriguing that LumiCharge included a motion sensor into the design of this lamp. The purpose of the sensor is to provide a small amount of light in a dark space so that you can find the lamp and turn it on. The motion light is really just enough to be able to see where the lamp is and where the power button is. It’s useful, but I’m not sure it’s 100% necessary.

CONCLUSION

I think the LumiCharge is a wonderful option for anyone looking to add light to their workspace along with some creative additions like the universal charging dock. I love the integrated LED display and the ability to change the color temperature. Its foldable design also makes it a winner because it’s easy to store when necessary.
