I appreciate how laptops provide us with an all-in-one computing solution for mobile work use. I’ve used a laptop for years (since I was a Freshmen in college — nearly 20 years ago) and the only thing I’ve never really liked about using one is the trackpad. They have come a long way since those days and have a lot more functionality than they used to, but I still like the tactile feel of a mouse. The only thing is that I’ve not wanted a wired mouse for my portable work station. I like the portability of the smaller wireless mouses and I’ve used a mobile mouse off and on for years. My mouse of choice has been a simple Bluetooth mouse by Microsoft that connects using a USB dongle. I love it for its portability and ease of use, but I’ve never liked the fact that I have to change batteries. This problem was recently solved when I picked up the Logitech MX Anywhere 2S Wireless Mouse — it’s 100% rechargeable!

The first thing you will notice about the Anywhere mouse is its incredibly compact, yet stylish design. It is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but it packs a powerful punch when it comes to features.

Multi-Computer Control — This is a new concept to me, but basically, the mouse will work with up to 3 computers at one time. You can switch seamlessly between connected devices with a simple press of the button. This is the same concept you get with a switch and wired peripherals. What’s even cooler than being able to switch back and forth between systems is that you can even copy/paste text, images, and files from one computer to another.

Tracks Anywhere — The mouse will track anywhere…on any surface…even glass. I’ve never had a wireless mouse, or wired mouse for that matter, that can operate on a glass or reflective surface. The MX Anywhere Mouse features a 4000-dpi Darkfield™ sensor that makes it possible to work virtually anywhere. I’ve been primarily using it on a white mouse pad and a dark desktop that is semi-reflective and I’ve not noticed any issues with operation.

Hyper Fast Scroll — The scroll wheel has two options to it — click wheel and smooth scrolling. To enable either option you simply press in on the wheel until you feel a click. This will switch between the two modes. The smooth scroll makes it possible for you to speed through pages of information while the click wheel option is meant for slower scrolling. I’ve used both and I really like the fact that I can use either on the same mouse.

Bluetooth LE — The mouse connects through Bluetooth to your computer (or some tablets). You can do this by either pairing to the mouse directly or by using the USB dongle that is provided. The plus side about the dongle is that you will have no hassle with pairing the mouse to your computer. You simply plug in the USB stick and start using the mouse. That said, I have a 2014 13-inch MacBook Pro and the mouse connected directly with Bluetooth with no issues. I’ve actually never had a mouse connect so easily to my computer. It has stayed connected and I really don’t have any complaints as far as connectivity goes. The dongle is very impressive though because it sits completely flush with the side of your computer and is very low-profile. I do wish there was an easy way to store the dongle when it’s not in use. Right now, it’s just sitting on my desk and could easily get lost.

One very important feature of the Anywhere mouse is the integration of the Logitech Options software. This utility makes it possible for you to program the mouse — even for a Mac. Logitech makes this a very easy operation by having a simple, smooth interface in their app. You simply click on the different parts of the mouse shown in images and you can program them to different functions. My favorite thing about this is that the side buttons actually become useful to me now. I’ve got them set to switch between my desktops and most of the time, I never know what to do with them because a gaming mouse doesn’t really give me the option to program those buttons to gestures like that.

I have to admit even though there is a lot to love about this little peripheral, the rechargeable battery is my favorite feature. I hate working on a project and halfway through it losing my mouse connection because the battery has died. On a full charge, the MX Anywhere mouse can last up to 70 days and it only takes 3 minutes on a charge to get a full day’s worth of battery life.

I’ve had nothing but good experience with the MX Anywhere mouse. It’s responsive, convenient, and incredibly functional. For a price of around $80, it is an investment worth making.
