Our society is becoming more and more of a “melting pot” with each day that passes. It’s very rare to go through the day without passing someone who has a different ethnic background and language that I have and I’m always interested in learning more about those people. I feel that by seeking knowledge of other cultures we can better understand our own. Language is a big part of what makes up culture and because of that, I also feel that it’s always nicer to be able to greet someone with their native tongue. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible to learn all the 6,500 languages there are in the world. That’s why I’m glad that devices like the Langogo Translator exist.

The Langogo Genesis enhances the travel experience because it helps users to overcome cross-language barriers. The device offers an online two-way translation in one second. It’s powered by 24 world-leading translating engines and ensures translation — even against different accents. In addition to being a world-class translator, the Langogo Genesis also acts as a mobile hotspot. It has an embedded eSIM that allows for a WiFi connection for up to 5 devices. This feature does require a separate Hotspot Data Plan purchase. The translator has a built-in 3.1-inch Retina display and it picks up human voice within about 30 inches. The Genesis also has a built-in AI voice assistant, Euri. This voice assistant is equipped for hands-free help with foreign travel. It has some handy tools available like weather, exchange rate, hotels, attractions, restaurants, and directions.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Langogo Genesis comes in a fairly nondescript box. It’s white, with the words “Langogo Genesis” stamped on the front. Aside from one descriptor (AI Translator Inside), there aren’t any details noted about the device on the outside of the box. Given the investment one needs to make to obtain the Langogo Genesis ($299 to purchase device + cellular plan), I would think Langogo would want to step up their game regarding the packaging. If I were to see this on a shelf, I would pass it by. The device itself is really sleek looking so they should show it off.

When I took the device out of the box, I was surprised at how much it looked like a mobile phone. It has an easy to read screen and charges via USB-C. The operation is very simple. Once it starts up, you simply select ‘translation’ and press the Translation Button on the side of the device. You press/hold the Translation Button until you are done speaking what you want translated. When you release it, the Langogo Genesis plays a translated version of what you said and displays it on the screen. This is also a conversation mode that will record an entire conversation and translate it for you. At the bottom of the Translation screen there is a menu that opens up the language selections. You have the option of scrolling through the list or searching for the language you need.

The Langogo Genesis works really well. I have been very impressed with it. It’s not faltered at all when making a translation and I only had one connection error with it. That had to deal with the voice assistant though and not the translator. It’s not 100% perfect, but it does a decent job of bridging the gap between two people speaking different languages. The Langogo’s voice is very easy to understand and does a great job of pronunciation. It all sounded very natural.

The only big downside to this device is the expense and the fact that it has to have an Internet connection to operate. You can connect to WiFi (if available), use a removable SIM card (not included) or pay a plan for the eSIM that is already installed. The interesting thing about this option is that you can use the Langogo as a hotspot for your mobile phone if needed. Because the device works with WiFi, I was able to turn on my mobile hotspot on my iPhone and connect to it from the translator.

CONCLUSION

This is a nice translator for people who frequently come into contact with those speaking a different language. It’s great for travelers, but I can see it also being great for doctors and educators since those professions often work with people of different backgrounds. The Langogo Genesis isn’t perfect and I think that generation 2 will be even better, but it’s a very advanced device that seems to be better than a lot of pocket translators in the market.
