As much as I love my iPhone, there are certain aspects of Android devices that are intriguing. One of those features is wireless charging. The product designers have yet to incorporate inductive charging into the iPhone’s infrastructure, but since they have developed it for the Apple Watch, this type of support may not be far off for the flagship mobile device for Apple. Until that time, there are some cases emerging in the market place that allow Apple users to enjoy the phenomenon that is wireless charging.

The wireless standard that is widely known is Qi is a charging system that consists of a power transmission pad and a compatible receiver in a portable device. To use the system, a user places a device on top of a transmission pad, which charges it via resonant inductive coupling. Over the past week, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to test out a Qi wireless case for my iPhone — the iON Wireless Qi Charging Case by iOttie.

First Impressions The case looks like a very slim battery case. It’s hard plastic and smooth to the touch. This smoothness actually causes the phone to slip a lot when I’m using my phone, which is a negative in my book. The case slides onto the iPhone quite easily and offers the option for the user to open the Lightning Charging port and charge the phone via Lightning Cable.

Use I’ve already mentioned my aversion to slippery cases and I will admit that I dropped the case more than once while testing it out. That being said, the phone itself remains damage-free. In addition to the basic case functions, the Qi Wireless Charging capabilities have been a joy to use. I have an inexpensive Qi charging pad that I had available to test out the charging capabilities of the case. I was amazed at how well it worked. All I had to do was place the phone in the iON case on top of the charging pad and it started charging. It has worked incredibly well ever since. The case and charging pad to get a bit warm while the device is actively charging, but once removed the heat dissipates very quickly. This was something I felt was acceptable because it is, after all, an energy exchange.

Conclusion The iON Wireless Qi Charging Case is a very cool accessory for the iPhone. Can you function without it? Sure, but why not use it if you have access to it. One of the things I truly love about this wireless charging option is that I have the freedom and ease of charging on my nightstand without having to worry about a cable connection. I really like that the iON gives users that as an option, but appreciate it’s natural functionality as a protective case. I would love to see the case have a soft silicone finish to aide with the slipping issue I had, but other than that, it’s a great case and fun technology to use.
