As a parent, I worry that my children will listen to loud media, which could lead to permanent hearing damage. We have historically had difficulty while attempting to talk to the children, raising our voices, and then realizing that they had noise-cancelling headphones in place or that they were listening to media too loudly. We have turned down the TV while watching movies/games, and iPads/phones as well. I believe that this may be our generation’s example of “do not sit too close to the TV, or your eyes will go crossed or get stuck.” Now, like many parents, we frequently tell our children to “turn it down.”

OSHA has set the safe workplace listening level at 85–90 Decibels, representing a safe volume for a weighted 8-hour time average. Despite the workplace limitation, some headphones allow ~100–110 Decibels at max volume, which could lead to damage via sound trauma. Even though volume increases linearly, the safe listening time follows a more drastic curved pattern. The safe listening time will be cut in half for every three decibels increase in volume.
