Spray cleaner made for today’s tech

The world we live in right now is hectic and confusing. Overnight, it seems, our world has been turned upside down by a tiny, microscopic organism that is deadly to some but avoids others with no rhyme or reason. The coronavirus has taken over our world and we are all trying to find a ‘new normal’ with all the restrictions that are implemented in our cities, counties, states, countries, and throughout the world. There are good samaritans out there trying to step up and ‘do the right thing’ to help people during this time. HÄNS is one of those special companies that are providing supplies for people to keep their devices and personal items clean and at the same time, giving back to organizations that are on the frontline trying to keep people in this new world going.

HÄNS is a company that makes cleaning solutions for products. As their website states, “we created HÄNS because we searched for a really great way to clean our devices but didn’t find it.” A little over a year ago, we published a review of the HÄNS Swipe Clean — a dual-sided, all-in-one, cleaner for smartphones, tablets, and touchscreens. It has been a remarkable option for keeping the surfaces of our devices clean and ready for use. Now, HÄNS has a new product — the HÄNS Ultra Clean.

DETAILS

HÄNS Ultra Clean is a cleaning spray that contains over 2.5 times the amount of active ingredients as the leading sanitizing/disinfecting wipe*. The spray is the same solution that was included in the HÄNS Swipe Clean and it’s been continually developed over the years from the ground up to clean ‘today’s’ tech. The spray comes with a cleaning cloth, which is dubbed a ‘cape’ by HÄNS. The cape has a special hole cut in it so that it can stay with the bottle of spray. The cape is antibacterial treated and washable. According to the product page on the HÄNS website, the cape’s material is “able to transfer the wetness of the solution onto the surface it is cleaning and not soak up the majority of the solution itself; reminiscent of a cleaning wipe’s wetness transfer.”

While it may be tempting to try and use the spray on any surface, HÄNS Ultra Clean is specifically designed to clean technology products like: phones, tablets, computer touchscreens, keyboards, car touchscreens, air pods, VR glasses, covers, cases, cables, and chargers. It’s not intended for use on nylon computer screens and certain TVs. These screens have different coatings from each manufacturer and rarely require the microscopic clean HÄNS provides. You can use a dry portion of the Cleaning Cape if needed for these types of screens.

* NOTE: despite having over 2.5 times the amount needed to be classified as a disinfectant or sanitizer, this is not a claim of HÄNS disinfecting/sanitizing agent, this is a highly regulated government space by the EPA and with the claims process taking years and a roughly $2 million dollar cost in fees and taxes, which is prohibitive to our mission.

USER IMPRESSION

One of the first things I noticed was the extremely creative artwork on the bottle. It shows a superhero battling with a microscopic organism in the middle of a cityscape. The instructions are printed on the front of the bottle (Spray Cape * Wipe Grime Away) along with contact information for HÄNS. There are some safety precautions listed on the label, too, but the ingredients are not. The spray does not have much of a fragrance. It has a mild chemical smell, but it’s not overwhelming at all.

Because the operation is simply to spray cloth/wipe clean, let me jump into how well the cleaning solution works. We’ve used it to clean iPhones and iPads — including the 2020 iPad Pro. The Ultra Clean certainly gets tech screens clean. We have a couple of shots included in this review that show a before and after. You can see how much dirt and fingerprints are wiped away from the surfaces of the iPads. I do want to note that while the surfaces get much cleaner than they were, they aren’t 100% perfect. I did notice that there are some smudges left on the screens after using Ultra Clean. I think that is probably due to two factors — 1) How dirty the screens were to start and 2) How dirty the cape is. You do have to spray quite a bit of the cleaning solution onto the cloth to really get larger screens clean (2 pumps for an iPhone 11 Pro/ 4 pumps for a 12-inch iPad Pro).

I do not have a good way to test if the microscopic organisms have been wiped away from the surfaces of these devices, but they definitely look cleaner on the surface to the human eye. I do want to make a special note here about whether or not this cleaning solution can eliminate the coronavirus (COVID-19). HÄNS does not make any claims that their spray (or any of their products) can disinfect surfaces that have been contaminated by COVID-19. All they say is that their proprietary solution is similar in nature to “leading disinfecting wipes.” To that end, MacSources and its writers do not endorse that this product can sanitize surfaces that are infected with COVID-19. The product does a nice job of cleaning surfaces that are covered in fingerprints, dust, and other particles that the human eye can detect. That is the only feature of this product that we (as MacSources) can state truthfully after our testing process.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’m a fan of HÄNS products. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I used the HÄNS Swipe and I’m thrilled that they are now selling the same cleaning solution in bottles. The marketing for it is really creative and it does a good job getting things clean. An additional perk to purchasing products from HÄNS is that they are donating 10% of all sales on their site to the Salvation Army until the pandemic is declared over.
