There’s a lot to be said for a high-quality, tough Bluetooth speaker. These rough and tumble audio devices can go anywhere and they make it possible to take your music with you wherever you go. I’ve had a lot of experience using these special speakers and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I like having the Bluetooth speakers that are great for indoors, but the all-weather options are wonderful when you have an adventurous spirit. The E5 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker from Havit is a really nice option for heavy-duty use as well as just having a nice listening experience.

USER EXPERIENCE

One of the first things I noticed about this speaker was how nicely it was packaged. The speaker comes in a simple, but well-protected retail package. It has a clear plastic front to the box that allows you to see the product inside. I like this method of packaging better than showing an image on the front. The speaker comes packaged with a Micro USB cable for charging and an Aux-to-Micro USB cable for connecting to an external device.

I found the startup/pairing process very easy. Upon turning the speaker on for the first time, it will enter Bluetooth pairing mode. This is indicated by the flashing LED indicator near the power button. It took about 5 seconds for the device to appear in my Bluetooth menu on my phone. When it did, I connected to “HAVIT E5” and started listening to some music.

I would rate the sound quality of the speaker at ‘above average’. It provides a rich, vibrant sound that a lot of speakers in its price range don’t do very well. And, while the speaker doesn’t have an independent amp, it does provide a louder listening experience than just the iPhone on its own. I listened to several different pieces of music that ranged from 90s Hip-Hop to Broadway Show tunes. Everything sounded wonderful. I was very impressed with the sound quality provided by the E5 speaker.

The controls of the device are interesting. Havit tried to make it simple by keeping them minimalistic. There is one main button that controls both the play/pause function as well as the power on/off function. To activate one or the other, you press one side of the button or the other. I think it may have been easier to just make them two separate buttons so that when you aren’t looking, you can easily feel which button is which. The volume up/down buttons are indicated by a raised + and — sign. They not only control the volume, but they will also advance or reverse tracks with a long press. The play/pause button also doubles as the answer/reject call button and activates Siri (when connected to an iPhone).

The design of the speaker is quite fascinating to me. The speaker is essentially two halves held together by a magnet. The interesting part of this is the design’s function. The speaker is made to pull apart from itself so that you may hang it places like from the bar of a bicycle. It seems to function very well in this manner but seems odd because the speaker part of the device is only on one half. I would have loved to see there be speakers on both halves so that you could open it up for a stereo sound experience as well as hang from places easier.

CONCLUSION

This little speaker quickly became one of my favorite listening devices. I was incredibly impressed with the sound quality and amplification of the volume from the connected device. I did find it odd that the speaker opens the way it does, but doesn’t provide a stereo speaker environment. That said, the E5 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker is a good investment for those who want to have music with them anytime — anywhere.
