Genaray Powerbank 64 Pocket LED

Perfect little fill light for on the go

Since I’ve been carrying a camera bag with me daily, I’ve been trying to get the overall weight of the bag down to the most minimal amount possible. I have my camera body and essential lens along with a flash, but sometimes it’s good to have another fill light on-hand for those ‘just in case’ moments. This pocket LED from Genaray is a good example of one of those types of lights.

DETAILS

The Genaray PB-64 Powerbank 64 Pocket LED Light is a bi-color SMD LED panel. It’s rechargeable with a built-in 1400 mAh Li-ion battery included. The light can be adjusted from 10% to 100% in 1% increments. In addition to the standard brightness adjustments, the light has a booster mode that provides an additional 30% output for a total of 130% brightness. This mode will only hold the 130% brightness level for 1 minute. The light has a built-in heat sink and an LCD screen that displays the brightness level. The light has a built-in 1/4–20 mount and comes with the mounting clamp, diffuser head, mini tripod, ball head, USB cable, and a travel pouch.

USER EXPERIENCE

There are lots of different types of these pocket LED lights and they do come in quite handy. What makes the Genaray stand out is the high-capacity, rechargeable battery. A 1400 mAh battery is quite nice on a light like this. Genaray claims that users can get approximately 1 hour of working time with it and while I haven’t used it that long consecutively, I’ve been impressed with the working time I get from the light.

The LED does a great job of providing fill light. I really like the LCD display that shows the brightness level and the easy to use controls on the side of the light. I do think the light is a little on the heavy side. That’s probably due to the heavy metal body that the light has. I have another pocket LED that has 198LEDs and is about twice the size of the PB-64, but it only weighs 1 ounce more. Genaray did make it very easy to snap the diffusion cover on and be able to remove it easily if needed and I love the travel pouch that comes with the LED. It’s just the right size for all the accessories.

One big issue I have with this light is its name — Genaray Powerbank 64 Pocket LED Light. Now, according to Genaray, the light is part of the “Powerbank Series,” but aside from the internal battery, there is no charging taking place with this light. There is a version of this light that acts as a power bank for external devices, but this model does not. The two models share the user manual, but I really don’t understand why this light is part of the ‘powerbank series’ if it doesn’t provide an output charge.

CONCLUSION

It’s important to have all the proper equipment with you when you travel or visit locations for shoots. It’s equally important to have a gear bag that isn’t going to weigh you down. This pocket LED from Genaray does a good job of providing strong fill light for a reasonable price.
