Evutec KarBON iphone 11 Pro max Case review | MacSources
A minimalist case that provides stylish protection for the iPhone.
As September edges ever closer, Apple fans around the globe ruminate about the latest and greatest iPhone. As the costs of our devices soar, more and more people seem to gravitate to phone cases to protect the investment. You can purchase large full-body waterproof/event-proof cases like those from Catalyst, Lifeproof, or Otterbox, or you could opt for a functional folio/wallet style case, a mountable case, or you could opt for a minimalistic bumper style case. Regardless of the plethora of options, some people still choose to leave their iPhone au naturel. Personally, when I see an unprotected phone in the back of someone’s pocket, I feel a twinge of panic set in. Alas, for others, my case may draw negative feedback. For those looking for an ultra-thin yet protective shell for their phone, consider adding the Karbon case from Evutec.
The Evutec Karbon case arrived in a 3 5/8 inches wide by 7 1/8 inches tall by 5/8 inches thick retail package. The cover provided a KARBON logo along the top, an iPhone 11 Pro Max sticker along the bottom, and a 2 9/16 inches wide by 5 5/8 inches tall clear plastic window. I liked that the white packaging starkly contrasted with the internal black aramid fiber case; the play on light versus dark did not go unnoticed. I found the iPhone 11 Pro Max sticker to be a little distracting and would have liked to see the information stenciled onto the case directly. Both side panels were left unadorned, the bottom panel listed several legal disclaimers, while the black Karbon rectangle atop the cover panel wrapped over the panel to the back. The main focal point of the reverse panel was the 2 5/8 inches diameter coin-like image with “Pound For Pound 5X Steel Strength” on the surface. The lifelike image almost appeared to rise from the surface of the packaging, which was a neat feature. Along the top of the panel, Evutec provided details about the strength/durability of the aramid fibers, and about the ability to wirelessly charge your phone within the 0.7mm thin protective case.
I removed the tape from the bottom of the box and slid the translucent tray out of the main packaging. I removed the 3 1/8 inches wide by 6 1/4 inches tall by 3/8 inches black case from the clear tray and found it to weigh 0.45-ounces. The unibody design had a 1 1/8 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches tall camera cutout (with raised protective rim) on the back and a small grey Karbon cube along the bottom of the panel. The top and bottom panels had trapezoidal cutouts measuring 1/4 inches tall by 2 1/4 inches wide at the base and 2 7/16 inches wide at the top. The volume/mute toggle side of the case had a 1 1/2 inches wide by 1/4 inch tall cutout, while the power button side of the case had a 13/16 inches wide by 1/4 inches tall cutout. Similar to the back panel, you will find a Karbon icon along the lower section of the panel. I liked the minimalistic design and the braided black on grey color palette.
To start the installation process, I pressed the volume toggle side of my iPhone 11 Pro Max into the Karbon shell. Next, I pressed the power button side into the case. I was immediately impressed with the fit, feel, and appearance of the Karbon case/iPhone 11 Pro Max combo. If you prefer body-armor style cases, the Karbon case may not sit well with you. However, if minimalism is your forte, you will alight in the 8.35-ounce combo. The case allowed full access to the volume toggle, the volume buttons, the power button, the lighting port, and the speakers. I loved that the company added a raised bezel around the precision-cut camera cutout, but wished that they had a little more protection around the screen. The aramid fiber backing material felt both smooth to the touch and added a little grip to the experience. My biggest concern was that the packaging did not mention a drop rating standard. I think I would trust the case to bumps, scuffs, and protection within a backpack. However, I do not think that I would trust the case against any fall over a few feet. In fact, the back of the packaging noted “Screen Protection not included but recommended.”
The case allowed full access to the physical buttons and to the screen of my iPhone 11 Pro Max. I was able to charge my phone with my Ventev Wireless Charge Stand and was able to insert it into the XXL Niteize Clip Case Sideways case. Even though I prefer the Catalyst Waterproof Case for iPhone 11 Pro Max, there was a simple elegance to the Karbon case.
