Comfortable office chair with reclining feature completes contemporary workspaces.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m always on the search for comfortable office chairs. My job rests behind the screen of a computer. Therefore, I spend nearly 12 hours a day sitting at a desk. In order for that to even be possible, I have to have a comfortable desk chair. For a long time, I relied on the standard brands you can find at big-box retailers, but I also found that they wore out far too quickly. I then moved to the gaming chairs. They are built to be more durable and withstand hours of continuous use. While those chairs lasted longer, they still ended up feeling a bit uncomfortable at the end of the day. That’s when I turned to Autonomous, the designer of my smart desk, to experience their ergonomically designed desk chairs. I ended up selecting the Kinn chair and hoped that I found the most comfortable office chair. I wasn’t disappointed.

DETAILS

The Kinn Chair features a special fishbone design and is made with advanced TPE material. TPE stands for thermoplastic elastomer. It’s environmentally friendly and incredibly durable. Thanks to TPE, the Kinn Chair’s set can last up to 10 years longer than a traditional mesh and foam options. The chair is designed to correct a person’s sitting posture and promote back health with optimal support. Autonomous has the Kinn Chair described as their “best ergonomic office chair.” The chair has an adjustable armrest, back tilt angle and tension, and seat height. The Kinn Chair is supposed to ‘form’ to each body as though it was custom-made to support a user’s spine. The lumbar support provided in the Kinn Chair is modeled after magnetic fields to encourage a seating posture that activates the body’s core muscles. In that way, it can provide a better sense of well-being than conventional office chairs. The Kinn Chair meets industry standards from BIFMA for ergonomic office chairs.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Kinn Chair came in a large cardboard box with its name printed on the outside. The box was a little awkward to maneuver as there were no handles cut out in the box. Upon opening it, I found the individual pieces of the chair were neatly tucked away and ready to be assembled. As I pulled out the pieces, I looked them over to make sure nothing had been damaged in the shipping process. Once I was sure I had all the pieces ready to be assembled, I took a closer look at them. One of the first things I noticed was the plastic caster wheels. I don’t want to dwell on this, but with a chair that can reportedly support up to 350 pounds, I was expecting something other than standard plastic casters. My concern is that with continued use I’ve seen casters either wear down or break off completely from a chair. My hope is that Autonomous will consider changing the wheel to something that is reinforced.

The next step was to review the assembly instructions which, as it turns out, was pretty self-explanatory. The first step is to insert the wheels into the base. The wheels snap into place, but you do have to push in with some force to get it to snap it into the base. Then you simply place the gas pump into the base, too. The next step is to align the seat with the back. Then, using the provided hardware, you screw the two sections together. Then you place the entire assembly on the gas pump. This is a fairly typical assembly based on other chairs I’ve put together.

I didn’t have any issues putting the chair together until it came to attaching the screws. I decided to insert and attach the screws along the back row first and then attach the four that secure the middle. I did it this way so that the screw holes that didn’t quite line up correctly would end up being pushed into alignment. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out exactly as planned and so I had to force the last two screws into the hole and tighten them very carefully so that I didn’t end up stripping out the screw or the pre-drilled hole. Once that step was completed, I was able to lift the seat and back section onto the wheelbase and the assembly was finished.

As noted above, the chair has adjustable arms, back tilt angle and tension, and seat height. Once the chair was assembled, I adjusted the height so that the chair wasn’t at its lowest point. Then I pushed the arm rests outward, which helps the seat area be a bit wider. When I sat down I could immediately feel support in my back and in the seat. I have to admit that when I saw the chair was made with uncovered TPU, I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the chair was. I did feel as though the seat was a bit short. It measures 19 x 19 and I’m used to a gaming chair that has a seat that is 21–22 inches deep. Those two inches really make a difference for me in the comfort department.

Now, while I found the Kinn Chair comfortable I have to admit that I couldn’t sit in it for long periods of time. This was because of a preexisting back injury that I have. I started noticing an ache after being seated and supported correctly after about 1–2 hours. I don’t believe this was any fault of the chair or its design. As I said, I could feel support in the proper areas, but for me and my ailments, I just couldn’t use the chair as long I would have liked.

CONCLUSIONS

The Autonomous Kinn Chair is a remarkable piece of office furniture. Despite the personal issues I had, I do still consider it on of the most comfortable office chairs I’ve tested. I gave it a 4-star rating based on it’s design, comfort, and easy assembly. I did have a few kinks in the system, but overall it was a good experience trying out this chair.
